The Grip

Holding your sticks in a relaxed position that allows the wrists and fingers to interact with the stroke is important. There are a variety of ways to hold the sticks in either a matched or traditional grip including French, German, American. These directions are a good start for drum set players using matched grip and allows for the whipping motion of the Moeller stroke. You'll find your ideal grip as your playing develops around the drum set. I like to use a combination of French grip for cymbals and American grip for the drums. However, there are subtle changes in grip when playing different sounds on the drums and cymbals.
